Michael Mwenso is a vocalist bandleader, co-founder of Electric Root, Emmy Award-winning creator, curator and creative artist.

Michael Mwenso’s journey began in the heart of West Africa, where his early life was infused with rich cultural rhythms. As a child in London, he found his voice through the powerful influence of Black music, guided by legends like James Brown. His passion for jazz led him to create the iconic ‘late show’ at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, a pivotal moment that galvanized the London jazz scene. Invited by Wynton Marsalis, Mwenso moved to New York City, where he became a transformative force at Jazz at Lincoln Center. With his band, Mwenso and the Shakes, he has built a vibrant community across the U.S., using music as a vehicle for love and expression. Co-founding Electric Root, Mwenso continues to challenge and reshape the music industry, fostering inclusivity and innovation.
